CURTAIN
Curtain , Series of 2 photos, 60x 60 cm, Chromalux print on Dibond, 2009
Curtain consists of two photographs showing the front and backside of a curtain. The content of the two photographs is reduced to minimal information: the presence of light creating graduation, shadow and dimension. These elements are core concepts of visual appearance and crucial to the becoming of a photographic image. The two photographs are not primarily concerned with depicting a recognizable object but they present enough content to evoke the idea of a curtain. They question how little information needs to be presented to represent an object. With a closer look, it is evident that one picture is the flipside of the other, being the negative mold of the other. This brings about a new aspect of representation – the being in front or behind a curtain, being exposed or covered and being spectator or performer.
